Marjolein and Martijn together in their studio

About us

We are Marjolein and Martijn, the makers behind LineDesign. Our love of clay began on the sofa, watching the British programme The Great Pottery Throw Down, in which amateur potters keep getting new challenges. We were hooked straight away. What a beautiful craft: you take clay from the ground and throw something useful from it on the wheel.

Marjolein took a pottery course at the De Helling workshop in Arnhem. During an open day there, Martijn was allowed to throw something himself, and it went surprisingly well. Not long after, we had a potter's wheel and a ceramic kiln at home, and our top floor became a studio.

Maker's mark LD

Marjolein

Marjolein works as an HR adviser at a care organisation and has been creative all her life. She makes clothes, turns wool into scarves, hats and even lamps, makes jewellery from polymer clay and epoxy, and paints. Clay was a logical next step for her. She throws and hand-builds all sorts of things: large lidded pots, vases, plates and bowls. She also loves throwing miniatures on her mini wheel, tiny pots made just as carefully as their big brothers.

Maker's mark MN

Martijn

Martijn is an electrical engineering teacher and has previously taught ICT, construction, housing and interiors, and media and design. His fascination with technology shows in his work, such as mugs with scratched decorations inspired by his own photos of technical installations, architecture and nature.

Hand-dug clay and test tiles from the kiln

Clay from the river

We also dig our own clay along the river and test how it behaves in the kiln. We are still discovering our own style, and that search is exactly what makes it so much fun.

Who made your piece?

Every piece is made by hand and therefore unique. The maker's mark underneath shows who made it: LD for Marjolein, MN for Martijn.
