Circuit board

Turn a circuit board over and you see a different world. Two mugs, inspired by the top and bottom of a Raspberry Pi 5.

The story

Every circuit board has two sides. On top sits the processor, with copper traces fanning out from it. Turn it over and you see hundreds of tiny components in tight rows and test points, like a city seen from the air.

For this series I photographed a Raspberry Pi 5 up close, on both sides. I sketched the lines on paper and then transferred them to clay. Every mug is thrown on the wheel. At the leather-hard stage I cut the components from clay and set them on the wall, then carved the copper traces and solder points around them by hand. I use no template and no stamp, so no two mugs are the same.

These are mugs to hold: you feel the relief of the board under your fingers and follow the path of the current with your thumb.
